WFML Brides: Sarah
Sarah Belford married her now Hubby on the most magical day of her life. “When people said to me ‘your wedding day will be the best day of your life’ I didn’t quite believe them, because I’ve had some pretty greats days before! But the twenty-sixth of March 2016 was absolutely the best day of my entire life.” She shares her fairytale with us below…
So please tell us – with months (or even years!) of planning, did the Big Day run smoothly!?
Our wedding day could not have run any smoother! I didn’t quite know what to expect, but the day far exceeded any of my expectations. We had a relatively short engagement, but somehow every little detail fell into place… My dress was perfect, the venue was magical, the photography session was delightful, the flowers were stunning, and the schedule of our day was not rushed or pressured in any way.
The weather was absolutely perfect: sunny and warm during the day until it started storming at the reception – we had an indoor reception with big open doors and windows so the storm just created a cool and cosy atmosphere without effecting our comfort or plan! We planned our ‘first dance’ for the very end of the night, and by that point the storm had settled down and the rain became a lovely light shower, so we ended the evening with the most romantic dance in the rain! One of the most beautiful moments of my life.
Was your wedding themed? Did you and your hubby go for a traditional feel or more contemporary style?
I loved elements of the rustic theme that everyone has been going for recently, but also wanted to keep it classy. I think the way I described my theme to vendors was ‘bohemian meets elegant’; a unique combination of natural, wild, sweet and elegant. Our venue was a nice balance of natural/rustic and classy/elegant, and we used some rustic touches such as tree log slabs as table centrepieces and the cake stand and vintage tall candlesticks. All of our flowers such as bouquets and reception arrangements had a beautifully wild look.
How did The Dress fit into your theme? Did you have an idea of which style you wanted before beginning the search for your Bridal Gown? And did this change much after you saw the girls at WFML?
I remember when I tried on my dress for the first time, I said “I feel like an ethereal princess” and my mum and maid of honour giggled and said “it’s the one”. I had a pretty clear idea in my mind of what I wanted before I began trying on dresses, but I hadn’t seen anything like it on any other bridal store website. I was honestly quite nervous on the day we went gown-shopping (we only visited two stores because after WFML there was no point!). I wanted a simple design, lots of lace and I loved the idea of flowers somehow being incorporated into the design. The Emme gown was the first gown I saw and tried on. It was made of the sweetest flowy lace and the hand-cut flowers as cap sleeves absolutely stole my heart. I tried on quite a few different designs, and they all made me feel beautiful in different ways, but nothing made me feel as sweet and genuine as I did in the Emme. The Emme was just… Me.
Did your man choose his Suit? Or with some guidance did you help him? Did his suit compliment your gown? (or was it the other way around hehe).
The suit was probably the hardest thing! We both wanted him to wear a grey suit. Sounds easy, right? NO. Who knew there were so many different grey suits?! I loved the classy look of the charcoal grey suits, but he liked the look of the lighter greys. Eventually we agreed on a nice charcoal, and we are so glad that we did! Charcoal is so close to black so we know it won’t age, but the grey tinge gives a nice alternative look to plain black. I think it complemented my gown really nicely, as it was classy and timeless but the charcoal colour gave it an alternative, slightly relaxed look. I like the way charcoal looks black in black-and-white photos, but up close it’s a slightly fresher, softer colour. Success!
How many dresses did you try on before you knew it was the one? 5? 10? 15+?
I tried on about six gowns at one other shop before we went to WFML. The Emme gown was the first gown I tried on at WFML, and I pretty much knew it was ‘the one’. I tried on another seven or so gowns after that at WFML but Emme was definitely the standout.
How did your gown make you feel on your very Special Day?
I really did feel like an ethereal princess! I have never felt so beautiful in my entire life, and of course hair and makeup plays a big part in this, but so does the dress! I had so many people comment on the dress, “this is the most beautiful wedding dress I have EVER seen”, “I wish I saw this dress when I got married!”, “If only there were designs like this 10 years ago!”. It was not only beautiful, but also COMFORTABLE! I felt like I was floating in it all day! I’ve looked at it quite a few times since the wedding day, and it still takes my breath away.
Were the girls from When Freddie met Lilly helpful in what can be quite a busy and time consuming process when find The Dress?
The girls were great! My initial appointment with Vanessa when I tried on the gowns was so delightful! She made the experience relaxed and simple, yet special and personal. It can be quite overwhelming trying on numerous dresses that could potentially be your wedding gown – that’s a big deal! But she was so relaxed, flexible, and made it stress-free to alter certain aspects of the design.
Any tips for our future Brides choosing a gown that makes the day complete?
Choose something that you feel comfortable in; something that complements who you are. Be open to different styles and try them on, because you don’t want to wonder at the end of it all “what would I have looked like in that style…”. You may not have a lightning strike moment of ‘this is the one’, and that’s okay. The experience can be very overwhelming, and it may take some time and thinking before you decide. Most of all, just enjoy and be in the moment. Enjoy trying on different gowns. Laugh at yourself when a design looks ridiculous on you. Soak up the excitement of this special season. It’s so easy to get caught up in the rush of wedding planning, making sure everything looks exactly like our Pinterest dream and ensuring that our wedding will impress our guests, but just remember that a wedding is just one day, but a marriage is a lifetime. Yes, plan a beautiful day that you will cherish forever and choose a gown that makes you feel like the most beautiful you’ve ever felt, but don’t let the rush and pressure of it all take away from the beauty and purity of this season.
